I take hundreds of photos (continuous drive mode). Of all the ones I took today, three were good. Some were decent.
The light was changing the whole time. Sun going down. No tripod. I decided to just work with manual focus. You really have to practice so it’s all muscle memory.
Something I did today that helped. Focus on a landmark — a nearby tree, a stump, a leaf at the end of a branch. Then when you see something interesting you judge closer-or-farther-than-the-landmark and you tell your focusing hand to adjust automatically in the right direction.
Gotta be fast. I’m not. Not yet, anyway. Faster than autofocus hunting for a bird in a thicket, though.
